Tinman and the Garland District would like to thank teachers for their dedication and hard work. SATURDAY, May 12 – Mother’s Day Mommy and Me Workshop – 1 to 3 pm – All ages

April 2012 Workshops

SPRING BREAK

TUESDAY, April 3 – Sculpture Making with Tresia – 1 to 2:30 pm – ages 6 to 12

Have fun designing a relief sculpture using cardboard, wire and tape. Then finish your KEITH HARING inspired relief sculpture with paint. $12, Tresia Oosting, Instructor.

WEDNESDAY, April 4 – Origami Paper Folding with Patti – 1 to 2:30 pm – ages 6 to 12

Patti will take students through several projects while she teaches them the fundamentals of folding paper. $12, Patti Reiko Osebold, Instructor.

THUR – FRI, April 5 & 6 – Kinetic Collage with Andrea – 1 to 2:30 pm – ages 6 to 12

Use found objects to create little sculptures that will then be hung to create a mobile. Students will be free to construct their own unique sculpture and are invited to bring in small objects that can be incorporated into to their design. Students will return on Friday, April 6 to finish and decorate their mobile. $20 for 2 days, Andrea Perry, Instructor.

Sheila will work on the various stages of pastel painting while talking about the process. Questions about technique and materials encouraged. No fee.

SATURDAY, April 28 – It’s Not Too Late! Tinman Grows Local – 1pm

As part of the Tinman Grows Local lineup we welcome Chrys Ostrander from Pine Meadow Farm Center. Chrys will give a seminar on how and what to do if you are one of the many people who are getting a late start on your garden. Attendees will take home their own copy of Chrys’ seasonal produce availability chart. $5

SATURDAY, Mar 3 – Katherine Malmo, Author Reading and Book Signing – 1pm

Based on autobiographic experiences, Who in This Room: The Realities of Cancer, Fish, and Demolition is a gripping collection of creative nonfiction that pushes the boundaries of story and memoir. Kate’s adventurous life is interrupted by a diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer, giving her a ten percent chance of living five years. But her story isn’t just about cancer. It is a true tale of survival that is both lived and dreamt. It’s about joy found in lemon trees or fly-fishing. It’s about the survival instinct that helps us re-emerge and engage with the world.

SUNDAY, Mar 4 – “Making Art from Grief”, Memoir Writing Workshop – 11am-1pm

Katherine Malmo, author of Who in This Room: The Realities of Cancer, Fish, and Demolition is offering a two hour workshop focusing on journaling as a way to emotionally heal from life altering experiences. Join us for a festively fall art class!  We’ll be using leaves to create a custom composition with crayons and watercolor.  The resulting product will be a wax-resist painting on 12×18 inch paper.  The process will include instruction on observational drawing, composition and color arrangements, color mixing, and watercolor techniques.  Bring your creativity and be ready to learn and have fun! $10+$5 supply fee, Darcy Drury, Instructor. Not only can you view Tresia’s new show, “Semblance” you can drop in to make some art as well. She’ll show you how to rewrite your old book with collage, drawing and painting to create an “altered book” that tells your own story. $15 if we supply the book.  Preregistration is requested so we can have enough supplies.  Call 325-1500.

Kelly once again visits the world of the unusual in her newest book, “In Search of Sasquatch”. In her pursuit for the truth Kelly spoke with a wide variety of experts and obtained first hand stories from eyewitnesses who have had their own encounters with this allusive creature. This is sure to be a fun-filled author reading as Kelly never disappoints her fans.

SATURDAY, Sept 10 – Author Reading with Claire Rudolf Murphy – 1pm

The Spokane Childrens’ Book Writers and Illustrators series starts again this fall with popular non-fiction writer Claire Rudolf Murphy.  She will read from her new book, “Marching with Aunt Susan” and always enjoys answering questions from young readers and budding authors. (At Tinman Too)

MONDAY, Sept 12 – Clay – 4 to 5:30pm – ages 8- 12

This clay class will explore the beginning stages of hand building.  The project is making a box out of slabs and adding clay for decoration. This is a two week class and students will be able to paint their fired project on Monday, Sept 19, $22, Liz Bishop, Instructor.

This clay class is geared towards the beginning stages of hand building. This project teaches how to use coils, balls and little slabs to create the free form vessel. Students will be able to paint the finished project on Monday, July 18 – 11 am to 12 pm. $22. Liz Bishop, Instructor.

In this workshop students will explore and create their own cave man painting. Learn about the different animals and symbols that were discovered in the caves of Lascaux, France. For this project charcoal and painting with berries onto a tile will be used. $12, Liz Bishop, Instructor.

Tinman Too is hosting regional authors, Michele Corriel and Janet Fox, for this month’s book reading and signing. Michele Corriel will be reading from her book “Fairview Felines – A Newspaper Mystery”, a middle school mystery. All the cats in Fairview disappeared and only Thomas Weston, newspaperman extraordinaire (and eighth grader) can find them. All the while Thomas battles the never-ending hysterical headlines that pop up in his head!

Janet Foxes book “Forgiven” is the story of Kula Baker, who must learn that the key to a happy life lies in accepting yourself. No fee.

In this new workshop series retired Eastern Washington University Professor Robert Lloyd will be taking students on a walking tour of the Garland district.
